Surya’s Story kicks off Fairtrade Fortnight

St Aldhelm’s rocked to a Bhangra beat when we hosted 2 performances of the celebrated play ‘Surya’s Story.’

Surya Arts’ Asian cast introduced students to the sights and sounds of India by performing Surya’s Story and then staging dance, drumming and banner-making workshops.

Surya’s Story is a theatre-in-education play written by our head of drama Sharon Coyne. It is about a young girl Surya, who sews pieces of leather to make footballs. Like many children in third world countries, what little she earns helps to feed her family.

The play aims to help students understand the inequalities brought about by globalisation and the way in which some children are exploited.

The performances at St Aldhelm’s coincided with the launch of Fairtrade Fortnight and proved a fantastic way to raise awareness of how we can all be more ethically responsible consumers.

All students in Years 7 and 9, along with the Year 10 drama group watched the play and then chose a workshop to join. The days ended with students performing to their peers and coming together for a peaceful protest march through the school and playground.
