Conor Burns MP hails “transformed” Academy

Bournemouth MP Conor Burns has described St Aldhelm’s Academy as ‘unrecognisable’ from the school he first visited six years ago.

The member for Bournemouth West – whose constituency includes St Aldhelm’s – was given a tour by Brian Hooper, CEO of Ambitions Academy Trust, and Principal Sian Thomas.

He was shown a Year 9 science lesson, listened to Year 10 music students perform a song and even painted a false nail with some Year 10 hair and beauty students.

The MP also visited the IT suite, and popped into maths, English, geography, and catering lessons and was shown around the new construction work that is being carried out.

He was impressed with the students who he met and said afterwards: “What I learned from my first visit here was that the latent talent is no different from the brightest and best in our local community.

“What is fantastic is to see that the academy has stability and committed leadership who are here for the long term.

“It has been transformed from simply a matter of ‘containment’ to education and development of young people.

“There is a partnership between young people and teachers to maximise skills and potential.

“It is utterly unrecognisable from the school I first walked into six years ago.”
