StAldhelm's building opening

Local residents, councillors and past and present pupils attended the official opening of the new St Aldhelm’s Academy.

The Academy has undergone a massive refurbishment programme to replace noisy, open plan teaching areas with new classrooms and to install modern facilities including specialist IT suites and science labs.

St Aldhelm’s Academy was taken over by Bournemouth-based  Ambitions Academy Trust (AAT) in June.

AAT has a track record in transforming underperforming schools and in addition to overseeing St Adhelm’s renovations has already appointed new Principal Sian Thomas, a new leadership team and 13, new teachers.

Welcoming guests to the official opening, Our Principal Sian Thomas said: “Our pupils started this term with a new uniform, an amazing new building and leadership committed to helping them reach their academic potential.

“This evening, some of those pupils have taken visitors on a guided tour of their new school and people have been surprised and delighted by the modern surroundings and terrific resources we can now offer.”

Among the visitors at the Open Building event was Rohan Bagshawe.

Mr Bagshawe was a pupil at one of St Aldhelm’s earlier incarnations, Kemp Welsh School, and now owns Potter & Pollard Chartered Accountants in Bournemouth.

He said: “It’s really interesting to come and see the new building. So much has changed since I came to school here of course and I’ve been particularly impressed by the new science labs.”

The building was officially opened the academy’s youngest pupil, Klaudia Plazewska, 11,who cut a bright orange ribbon, one of the academy’s official colours.

Sian Thomas added: “We now hope prospective pupils and parents will come along  to our Open Evening on October 1, to see our new building and learn about our vision for an outstanding St Aldhelm’s Academy.”

Our Open Evening takes place on Thursday October 1, from 6-8pm.
