Principal’s Welcome

Dear Parents and Students

I have been the Principal of St Aldhelm’s Academy since June 2020.  I started working at the academy in 2015 when the school joined Ambitions Academies Trust and I am proud to have been part of the journey the school has been on.

The March 2016 OFSTED report described the academy as having been ‘transformed’ through ‘rapid and sustained improvement’ reflecting the hard work that has been put into the education of our students.  Observations by the inspection team praised the ‘calm and harmonious’ learning environment along with the ‘high level of trust and respect’ that exists between teachers and students.  We have continued to build on this success and as each term passes, the academy continues to deliver and develop high quality education for all its students.

In our most recent OFSTED visit (November 2021) the school was graded as a ‘Good’ school again. OFSTED praised the academy’s ‘strong community ethos’ and stated that ‘positive relationships between staff and pupils underpin this’.  They acknowledged we are an ‘inclusive’ school ‘where pupils of all abilities and backgrounds are valued’.  The Inspection team also praised our well sequenced and constructed broad curriculum and recognised that our work is rooted in ‘a clear moral purpose to improve outcomes for all students’.

As Principal, I am passionate about achieving the best possible outcomes for our students and want to build on the successes of the school as we move forward into the next decade, leading the school to the next stage of its development and beyond.  We are on the verge of an exciting next chapter as we continue to grow in student numbers and plan accordingly for this in term of further building work.  We offer outstanding facilities already: a large theatre, dance studio, modern classrooms and four computer suites.  in addition we will have a brand new canteen for September 2022.

The mantra of St Aldhelm’s Academy is ‘High expectations lead to High Achievers’.  This is a motto very close to my heart and I can assure you that I have very high expectations of myself in the first instance and the staff team.  Equally, I also have high expectations of our students in terms of achievement, behaviour, attendance, uniform and attitude to learning.  My expectations and standards are high in every aspect of school life.

I believe in the power of education to change young people’s lives and the right of every child to receive an excellent education.  I am dedicated to offering opportunities for students to achieve the very best both in and outside of the classroom.  At St Aldhelm’s Academy we believe that education is about developing the whole child and providing opportunities for them to belong, explore and flourish within and beyond the classroom. We are very proud of the broad and balanced curriculum we offer and beyond the classroom we offer a range of extra-curricular activities.  It is the aim of the whole Academy team to help each young person become a successful learner and well-rounded individual who is ready to continue their learning journey when they leave us at 16.  I truly believe that with hard work they can achieve anything.

We pride ourselves on clear and regular communication with parents about their child’s personal and academic development.  I believe that the relationship between parents and carers, staff and students is crucial to the success of any school.  From my experience of being in education, I know that a successful and happy school depends on all of us working together.  As a parent myself and as a staff body we share our parents’ wish that all students will leave St Aldhelm’s Academy as resilient, confident, kind and caring young people who will be successful as they navigate life and contribute positively to the community in which they live.

Ultimately, the best way to experience the high quality of education we provide is to visit us during a working day. I look forward to welcoming you to our academy where you will see for yourself that ‘High Expectations’ really do lead to ‘High Achievers’.
